A course about the ways in which medieval travelers interacted with the places they visited and the people they encountered, both in Europe and in other lands. Students concentrate on primary sources: chronicles of the crusades, guides to pilgrimage routes, Marco Polo’s history of his travels, etc. Through research assignments and class discussions, students discover how Europeans explored the world before the Age of Exploration.
