Provides an historical overview of the development of Latino/a culture in the United States.

FOT 4800 Translation Studies Practicum

Credits: 3; Prereq: FOT 4801 and FOT 4812C.

Practical training for advanced translation students in a free-lance or job environment, using computer-assisted translation tools. By working closely with a mentor, professional experience in translation is required.

FOT 4801 Theory and Practice of Translation

Credits: 3; Prereq: instructor permission.

Theory, history and practice of translation, focusing on approaches to the acquisition of translation skills.

FOT 4803 Translation for the Professions

Credits: 3; Prereq: FOT 4801.

This course includes technical, contractual, film, multi-media and medical translation.

FOT 4806 Translation for Diplomacy, Law, and European Union Issues

Credits: 3; Prereq: FOT 4801.

This course focuses on international, hemispheric, and European Union issues in translation, government translation is also covered.

FOT 4810 Advanced Translation Workshop

Credits: 3 to 3; Prereq: FOT 4801.

Advanced seminar focusing on special topics in translation. Topics will rotate and will include literary translation, translation history and criticism, cross-cultural communications and translation, ethics and the philosophy of translation.

FOT 4812C Terminology and Computer-assisted Translation

Credits: 3; Prereq: FOT 4801.

This course will cover the theoretical and practical aspects of terminology management and computer-assisted translation (CAT). The practical aspect will consist of training in computer-assisted translation, including the use of CAT tools.

LAS 2001 Latin American Civilization

Credits: 3.

Interdisciplinary introduction to the study of Latin American societies and cultures. The course provides students with a general knowledge of Latin America and its people, preparing students for future course work in Latin American Studies. (H, S, I)

LAS 4905 Individual Work

Credits: 1 to 3; can be repeated with different subjects up to 10 credits.

Qualified students may choose a topic on Latin America that cuts across disciplines, to work under the supervision of a faculty member affiliated to the Center for Latin American Studies, who will sign the form (see Ms. Carter at 316 Grinter).

LAS 4935 Latin America Area Seminar

Credits: 3; can be repeated with change in content up to 9 credits.

These are multidisciplinary seminars offered on different topics each semester. Required of all candidates for the undergraduate certificate and minor in Latin American Studies.

Health issues throughout Americas, especially indigenous/Mestizo Latin American populations. Holistic approach covering politics, economics, history, geography, human rights, maternal/child health, culture. Letter grading.
M264. Latin America: Traditional Medicine, Shamanism, and Folk Illness (4)
(Same as Anthropology M264 and Community Health Sciences M264.) Lecture, three hours. Recommended preparation: Community Health Sciences 132, bilingual English/Spanish skills. Examination of role of traditional medicine and shamanism in Latin America and exploration of how indigenous and mestizo groups diagnose and treat folk illness and Western-defined diseases with variety of health-seeking methods. Examination of art, music, and ritual and case examples of religion and healing practices via lecture, film, and audiotape. Letter grading.
